Historical background of the Roorkee Adventist College

Roorkee Adventist College has its beginnings in 1927 when Elder A.H.Williams,then resident of the Northern India Union of Seventh-day Adventist, purchased property midway between the towns of Roorkee and Mangalore on the Haridwar Meerut Road,

Which became to be known as “The Retreat” among the mission Aries. Twenty-two students courageously enrolled in the school’s first year of operation.

Then known as The Adventist Training School, the college opened its doors for a two-year program of instruction in Adventist doctrine and the Bible. Two years later the school was converted into a high school. With foresight, Elder Steeves, expanded the school’s resources by accepting nearly 100 ages of land leased to the school specifically for the students to have opportunities to work on the farm to earn their tuition. Income from the farm products still supplements the school’s annual operating budget.

The school went through several development stages and in 1937 was recognized by the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventist as a co-educational school.

The inter State Board of Anglo Indian Education recognized the school in 1966 which enabled the students of various disciplines to sit for the Senior Cambridge Examinations.

In 1975, the institution began the 10 + 2 system of education with the CSE &ISC examinations. The following year the two-year Bible training program was reinstated. Fifteen students were enrolled in the program in its first year and twelve more the following year.

In August 2001,The inter College was extended into a Community College, offering associate degrees in Nursing Assistant ship ,Elementary Education, and Secretarial Science.

At this very important phase of the development of the institution as a post intermediate institution, the name was changed to Roorkee Adventist Community College. In continuation with the developmental master plan to develop Roorkee Adventist Community College as an elite institution of higher learning, In 2003 the college began offering regular Bachelor Degrees in Business Administration, Computer Applications, Physical and Biological Sciences in association with the Allahabad Agricultural institute, a Deemed University in Allahabad. The name of the college was also changed to Roorkee Adventist College.

In2005,the college felt the need to affiliate to a local university to enhance the employment opportunities of the local students.
